Heart Apple 2000

Interesting story! Someone just e-mailed me this photo of the oil pastel drawing I made for a 3rd year advanced drawing class at USC in Spring 2000. This drawing was something that the drawing professor and classmates railed on because to them it was too kitsch. It was too photo like.  Why draw something realistic when we have cameras now. It needed to be more, I don't know... abstract? Less derivative? They liked the way I rendered the dress but not the face and arms. To them it needed to be more... raw I think. Art people... eh, are not as open minded as they should be actually. This drawing had a negative emotional mark on it for me. I went back to my apartment in an angry huff because of them. Me and the fine art department/community were not in agreement on many things. I wanted to go one way, while they were pushing something I didn't want to build a career on. Art is what you make of it.

Anyways, I gave this to a friend of my roommate(they were both members of the USC marching band, my roommate was the lead of the clarinet section and her friend was the baton twirler, she could twirl a pen just by bouncing it off her elbows! She was amazing!)because she told me she loved it when I pinned it onto the wall.  I told them what they said about it. "I still love it!" I gave this drawing its proper home. This drawing has managed to pop up. Thought it was long gone! The frame makes it look so much better!  Good times!
